The West Coast of Sumbawa is blessed with many uncrowded surf breaks. Although many people travel further down the coast to the more popular areas where famous surf breaks like YOYO’S and Tropicals, there are 9 great surfing waves within a 10/15 min drive of our centre and a beginners break can be found in front of Mondo Conservation Dive and Surf Centre. We stock basic surf accessories (such as wax and leashes) also have a range of quality boards for hire.
Most of the time, there are less than a handful of people on these waves and it is not unusual to have good quality waves all to yourself. The swell is fairly consistent and you will be able to find waves to surf most days of the year.
Sumbawa is recognized across the world as having some of the best surfing breaks in Indonesia for advanced and professional surfers these include Northern Rights and Dirty Hippies.
However, this coast offers a range of surf breaks to suit everyone including beginners, where you can learn to surf in a safely. We can teach you to surf, improve your surfing skills and also advise you about the best surf breaks to explore. We can provide boat or road trips further down the West coast so you can sample some of the more remote waves.
To give you an idea of the range of waves, here is a summary of some of the most local waves:
Kertasari Bay (in front of Mondo Conservation Dive and Surf Centre/Whales and Waves):
Gentle reef break, ideal for beginners at high tide
Dirty Hippies:
Excellent left hander. Suitable for all levels (depending on swell size and tide)
Middle Reef:
Fun and easy slow breaking wave, suitable for beginners.
Northern Rights:
World famous right-hander which tubes on larger swells. Suitable for intermediates on smaller swells, larger swells for experts only.
Mangroves, Limestones and Dermaga:
Located in Kertasri Bay, these three breaks are all accessible and work well on mid-high tide. Depending on swell size they are suitable for all levels. Best avoided by beginners at low tide.
Power Station:
Right-hander suitable for intermediate and expert surfers with occasional left. Picks up a lot of swell so worth checking out when everywhere else is too small.
Mondo Conservation Dive and Surf Centre is more than just a typical dive school. You will learn more than just how to dive. We would like you to gain an understanding of the marine environment and its challenges
